LimeLight : Science and not fiction

He is a senior scientist working in CSIR, Trivandrum and Honorary Director for Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage. He has amassed a host of academic qualifications that ranges from Masters in pharmaceutical chemistry, industrial sociology and journalism, all the way up to a D Lit in Sanskrit. He has earned these accolades for
studying Indian Scientific Heritage, for this is his area of passion.

Meet Dr N Gopalakrishnan, who travels the hither to yon of the world spreading the message that there is a distinct link between Indian heritage and science and there are indisputable scientific explanations to what we practise as our heritage.

"Working as a senior scientist and also having studied the Indian scientific heritage in-depth, I wanted to contribute something original to the society. After nearly two decades of research I found that there is very deep scientific knowledge that existed in Indian heritage. My mission is to bring this back with the help of ultra modern science and instruments and ensure this is accepted by the more modern Indians world over, some of whom are losing touch with their own roots and heritage.

"The overwhelming response that I have received in this love's labour from the audience globally, constantly motivates me to probe and find out further about this mesmerising subject and also to spread the message far and wide," says Dr Gopalakrishnan.

Explaining with a small example he says, the most sensitive part of the body is the forehead.

"A section of Indians apply sandalwood paste on the forehead as it cools and activates the brain. The red vermilion applied on the forehead by married women again absorbs and radiates mild UV rays. The most sensitive skin area in an entire body is that of the ear, particularly the area behind the ear and when people tuck 'Thulasi' leaves behind the ears it enhances blood circulation.

"Sitting on a plank or mat while praying is being practised by several religions and this is because squatting on the ground should not diffuse the bioelectrical radiation and this happens when the body is in contact with the floor. It has been scientifically
established that the cadaver when cremated is reduced to a mere 58 grammes of ash -- however obese the person might have been during his lifetime -- all that is left of him is this and such findings often have a bearing on the psychology of an individual prompting him to lead a sin free life. Thus every act of Indian heritage has
strong scientific connotation," declares the scientist.

The Surya Namaskaram or the salutation to the sun that is considered spiritual also involves the use of 186 movable joints of the body that work in perfect harmony with one another. It is also a remarkable combination of seven yogas and hence this salutation is considered scientifically as the king of exercises..

"Indian heritage has very deep biological, psychological, scientific and spiritual meaning. When practised it leads to social, family and national integration. And travelling within the borders of India and outside it, I was alarmed at the level of ignorance of people about their own heritage. At the same time what was uplifting was their extreme level of interest to know more. I often have as part of my audience, people from various walks of life, from many ethnic groups and what is the core concept of my speech is that I address them not to exhibit my knowledge, but to ensure I talk in a manner that they are able to comprehend, such that their interest does not waver or wane and thus my purpose is achieved.

"A few months back when I visited 17 universities in the USA and another seven universities in Canada, I found youngsters willing to sit for close to five hours to listen and grasp the nuances of our Indian scientific heritage. As long as I could link our various practices to science, it appealed to their contemporary thinking and
what they had been rebelling against is authority flaunted by seniors saying, 'this is what has been practiced by generations. Don't question it, just learn to abide by it,' and blind acceptance is something they are not ready for."

The fact that he has been successful with spreading scientific Indian heritage is evident from the fact that various demographics respond to him in different ways. The youngsters ask a variety of probing questions, refuse to accept unless fully convinced, make notes diligently, "and if I am able to create an impression in their
youthful, vibrant minds, I can draw strength from such modest success," says Dr Gopalakrishnan.

"When I am lecturing, I ensure that at no point am I caught droning on endlessly unmindful of audience participation or response. I always keep three people sitting in various corners of the auditorium as my reference point. I note with care, changes in their facial expressions, just one yawn will quickly make me introduce a joke, somebody glancing at their watch will prompt me to narrate an event from real life and thus as much as my audience has learnt from me, each lecture demonstration is a learning experience for me too," he smiles.

He derives strength from the fact that every single practice of our Indian heritage can be scientifically explained leading to information dissemination in the wavelength of the present day generation. And this is also precisely why students -- both Indian
and non-Indian -- from Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge have invited him year after year to address them.

In 18 years of lecturing, Dr Gopalakrishnan has given over 5,500 lectures. He is still a student for he would like to acquire an academic degree once every five years, studying something new and facing the viva voce, for this is an experience that keeps the brain constantly in alert mode.

Besides it is important for a teacher to be continuously learning in order to impart the best to the taught he observes.

"My message to Indians around the world is that unmindful of your political, religious or other leaning, learn about India, for it is your country. Even if you wish to criticise India, first learn comprehensively about it in order to help you highlight its flaws. Do not criticise with superficial knowledge. My studies have reaffirmed my faith in people and none can be categorised as bad"

"Every individual is a manifestation of the divine. With the right approach, hard to dispute logic and sound reasoning, up to 60 per cent of negatives in any individual can be corrected. And when I say this I do not want to sound like a sanyasin for I am at all times a scientist. I want to fulfill my promise to Indian President Dr Abdul Kalam that by Aug.15, 2007, when India will celebrate the 60th anniversary -- Shashtiapthipoorthy -- as it is called, at least 100 million people would have got my message of Indian scientific heritage. This target is my constant motivation, as I move from one lecture demonstration to another, looking at the eager faces in front of me, thirsty for knowledge and hungry to know more about their own heritage"

Message to World

Indian Heritage on science and technology has a history of not less than 5000 years starting from the subjects of mathematics, astronomy, geometry, health science, food science, yoga, Metallurgy (science of metals), space science /air crafts technology, plant science and so on. There are thousands of books catalogued by different organizations and institutions in India and abroad, which are presently available either in the printed form or as manuscripts in palm leaves.

This history record, starts from Vedic period. The mathematics and astronomy were dealt together in hundreds of text books written in Sanskrit and in regional languages.
Mahabhaskareeya, Laghubhaskareeya, Vateswara Siddhanta, Bruhat samhitha, Sidhanta siromony and many similar books still available in the printed form with English commentaries. They give the subject matter qualitatively and quantitatively at par with the modern developments.

The books on health science, Charaka Samhita, Susrutha samhitha, Ashtanga hrudaya and so on written many thousand years ago are the part of curriculum in more than 300 ayurveda colleges in India and more than one hundred institutions outside India.

Indian heritage on the metallurgical sciences (loha thanthra, rasa saastra and so on) also goes back from the period of Yajurveda. Many ancient textbooks describe the rasa sastra and artha saastra giving detailed descriptions on the ores, minerals and methodology of extraction and purification of metals and their compounds, which has been supported by the archeological evidences.

Indian technological heritage has vast area of knowledge from metallurgy, ceramics, glass, textiles, furnaces, leather, civil engineering and architecture, granite and marble, and so on. These are clearly demonstrated in ancient Indian books, cave temples, temples, forts, palaces, etc..

Indian approach to management is described in detail in Bhishma Upadesa, Vidura Upadesa, Sukra Neethisaara, Bharthru Hari neethisataka, Chanakya neetisaara, Bhagavath geetha, Yoga Vasishta and so on.

The Indian approach to management is an integrated approach looking into physiological, psychological, family - society and national aspects.

Indian spirituality has become the absolute truth and facts for the western world which was wandering after the Semitic religious messages got evacuated from the western scientific mind.

Indian mantras, Upanishads, Vedas, spiritual darsanas, pranayama and customs and rituals are being accepted after systematic scientific analyses, by the developed world. The messages of Indian Rishies are also being accepted when they visit abroad for showering the messages of Lokaa: samasthaa: sukhino Bhavanthu and love and affection without religious convertion.

IISH workers are excited to see and know that world over particularly in the most developed countries like USA, Canada, European countries, Australia and so on the Indian mathematics, metallurgy, health science, ayurveda, yoga, mantras, music, vedic mathematics, New Age Therapies, vegetarian foods, family system, rituals and customs are being accepted with utmost sincerity and devotion.

We the mission oriented workers are sure that you will also get attracted to the messages of Bharatha, by yourself, when you devote a small part of the time for this mission of learning and teaching. Looking forward and welcoming you to this mission !

A REVIEW OF 'SLUMDOG MILLIONER'

SATYAMEVA JAYATHE “TRUTH ALONE TRIUMPHS”

Ah what an irony? We needed an Englishman to show our greatest cultural belief of “satyameva jayathe” which if translated in to English reads as ‘Truth alone triumphs”.

Slumdog millioner , was a treat to watch as the drama unfolds to be of one greatest suspense thriller than any contemporary movies. Perhaps “sholay” too might fit in to our minds as an epoch of a movie. The reality strikes on the bulls’ eye and the director could not have been more forthright than what he has shown. It did convey the greatest of all SATYAMS. The real country and the life has been depicted just the way we saw our youth in an emerging India about a couple of decades back and similarities of Bachan movies are unmistakable and as a Bachan fan, who grew up traveling throughout India of the Eighties and Nineties clicks the right chord in ones mind of our younger days and for a whole generation we have known Bachan movies just as like our Harry Potter generation of the present.

The name ‘slumdog’ might be little disturbing for our elite, who has slammed the movie as just one among so many alike. But watching the girl waiting for young Jamaal, as a child in the shade from the brutal rains, and ultimately sitting tired to be invited in to the shade in spite of his elder brothers order not to do so, was exactly the time when the name meant its meaning to be conveyed, could not have been a more refined word so as to be solace for all and sundry. The director was showing and conveying a strong message for our own elite to think about and do something about it. Or just another futile exercise which is not enough to move the hard nuts who does not get cracked that easily.

What ever be the arguments, the fact and truth is that “truth can not have been more stranger than fiction story”. There is a dog eating dog world out there or rather man eats man times in reality.

DEATH CAUSED BY IGNORANCE OF THOSE RESPONSIBLE EQUALS TO MAN SLAUGHTER

HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS, SPEEDY REDRESSAL FOR SURVIVAL.

I have been through the worst period in life since last couple of months when suddenly, my bosses’ takes a ‘u’ turn in my case as a heart patient who has reached the fag end of his life.

First breach came when I pointed out certain irregularities, in planning and execution of our system changes. Any layman with common logic will certainly go for the best in terms of network and software used for our bank which then had about 1350 branches all around the country but majority in West Bengal, North East and Orissa.

Once the settlement was reached between the Unions and management after years of negotiations for getting our branches fully computerized and subsequently to be networked so as to make it CBS Branches, which means a customer who is holding an Account any where in the Country will be able to do banking and access his account from any where in the country where we, our bank, has a branch.

Those who came out with a solution and choose the right software especially foreign banks who were the late entrants to our country along with the new generation banks reaped the harvest, of having a network of branches in important towns, as our management was sitting in their respective Offices waiting for their day of reckoning, which is their retirement day.

Our Recruitment was banned for some years and as a result of the status of our bank as one of the weakest after the prudential accounting norms were introduced in the Nineties, we only had old guys with obsolete mind tuned to our working culture of ledgers and ledger keepers. Though other Nationalized banks were quick to recoup and made their of Virtual Private Network on war footing, as our old guys who were sitting pretty with out any job as majority of our funds were kept in Government Securities with out lending and the earnings out of Govt. Bonds doesn’t need so many officers, as any 8th std guy could have done the same for almost a decade. Even as our fellow bankers were seen recruiting fast of youngsters who are more tuned to the systems and networking still our big bosses were sleeping and refused to act. Corruption and fixing each other in traps were the order of those days resulting in chaos and utter mismanagement and their blunders till our first VRS batch, employees who left out in masses with what ever money was offered to them out of sheer frustration of the in action and delayed decisions so bafflingly slow as years went by, and every guy was aware that out of the employees left almost one third officers were old and was retiring in 2008 alone. Only such a scenario made our biggest guys to open their eyes and make some intake which in itself was in sufficient and to add on to our woes out of those 300 new Officers who joined I am told only 100 is with us as others have gone to greener pastures once they realized that ours is a Bengali Bank with the out look still that of a man in his Sixties and the top bosses were almost one hundred percent Computer illiterates. They simply refused to move out and make way for the youngsters who are experts in networking and CBS. Those unfortunate ones who dared to point out the mistakes were either ‘fixed’ or kicked out as our management never wanted to listen to better sense or common sense.

In my case too I was targeted for having pointed out our banks flaws and corrective measures on war footing was needed instead they targeted me personally and has ever since been after me and I was told by some of our union big wigs that they have decided to kick me out un ceremoniously and as a first measure started to bounce my cheques.

I have enough proof to move my case to an authority or a human rights watch dog and get compensation for my family who may suffer due to my ill health or demise. It became clear that instead of addressing our woes they were more interested in removing those who points out their mistakes. Having the proof of number of new quality accounts opened in the last 5 years, I wanted Comparisons with those who were promoted while as one of the leading quality accounts opener in last 5 years I was alone rejected. So it is clear that performers will be given a kick in the back, while those without the backing of performance are given promotions.

But the serious issue is the denial of funds even on medical grounds, proves the attitude of our bosses who are keen on not saving lives but is deliberately causing constraints to those sincere employees, who may be unfortunate and not in very good shape healthily due to their very nature of sincerity and commitment towards their institution and customers.

WRATH OF THE DEVIL.

WRATH OF THE DEVIL.

As a stressful bank employee, I have seen the devils of money laundering and the most corrupt people of India. I have this first hand experience of seeing and observing all throughout my 21 years tenure, during which I worked from Nagaland down to the southernmost tip of Kerala.

As the matter is very sensitive and needs absolute confidentiality, I can only wonder why work for the most corrupt? Why not quit and look for some other job, which though may not fetch much and there will be also a lack of security in times of recessions and depressions. Firstly, I will be relieved of the stress of working, where there is money involved, and for the same reason as custodians we have to be on our toes all throughout.

When I joined a bank it was then considered as the most sought after job in India and the aura of being a bank employee was regarded very high perhaps even now. But my brother in law who too was a banker advised his daughters not to join banks as he had suffered so much, a little at least, due to his own temperament but in majority of cases, he was put through untold sufferings by his management, which ultimately resulted in a suspension followed promptly by a bye pass surgery.

The ground of his suspension was that he had advanced to a fictitious guy according to his rival manager, the bank to without verifying suspended him immediately, but the truth came out eventually and though the bank took him back, the damage has been done and he became an innocent person who was made to go through hell, any humanitarian watchdogs certainly would have got him compensation, had he fought further. But due to his daughters who were both studying engineering, he suffered silently until the stress got the better resulting in heart attack.

In my case too, I had to go through hell due to my very nature of honesty and commitment towards our customers, for whom I always lend my supporting hand and they all loved me for being a gentleman who gives the quickest possible service in our retail outlets called branches. This not only made those ‘chamchas’ and ‘kamchores’ as told in Hindi for those ,who are parasites and survives without working by indulging in such activities to please their bosses. Some don’t mind working in the kitchen of his boss to please him at times also can be seen doing the brokers job for elevation in life by way of promotions. The best qualities needed in these cases are the ability to work in the kitchen of his bosses, while errand running and in some cases even pimping for his bosses.

If you are an upright person who is not willing to compromise on your principles and virtues such as honesty, sincerity and the refusal of sops for the work we are supposed to do honestly and to the best of ones capacity, then you are bound to remain at the bottom as ninety percent of the people are corrupt in today’s world. Naturally you also will have to face the wrath of such guys if you happen to stand in the middle denying him an opportunity for a quick buck.

But my strength always was the truth and the truthful 10 percent who is still willing to stand by you to face the music together. God also plays his own chess games with people always reminding them of the futility of a sinful life. Though, at times I have had to take harsh beatings, I have always bounced back with strength after each such setback in my 48 years of life.

Even when the whole world may seem against you on some occasions, providence alone saved me from certain death at least a dozen times in my life. In rare cases the most acutely planned and exercised ambush got destructed even before I realized what was about to hit me. Such occasions gave me more strength just because I know god is with me. Every person dies once but cowards dies thousands of times before his actual death, due to the very fact that they are feeling insecure due to the crime behind each fortunes made. The curse will definitely follow because Truth will have the support of God almighty the greatest balancer of lives.

WOMEN THE BEST COMPANIONS DURING RECESSION

FEMALE COMPANY THE BEST WAYOUT DURING WORST BLUES.

As a person I have undergone hell during my 48 years. In different locations under different situations when depression becomes our companion for life, especially men or women with responsibilities, some times also due to financial woes and the need to earn bread for your family will inevitably eat up your time and energy to the hilt in some instants to the extreme edge, when some even think of ending life as an escape route, it may look and experience, as if there are no end to ones blues and bad times, at times out of job for no fault of yours.

Those are the exact times to mingle with girls ,if possible in gangs as they can get you out of the blues instantly by their presence and laughter and the smiling faces are enough in 99 times out of 100, to change your moods to positive energy and creativity. I have real life experience and sex is the last thing in my mind. Just being with them makes me forget all my blues. There are days on which on incidentals makes you meet women and if you are able to talk to them for 5 minutes of just silly weather talk or juicy stuff about other women can actually have a real life effect of lifting you and your spirits.

Music, Films all creates such highs to your mind and conscious but the most practical inexpensive and exhilarating experience is for me talking to girls pretty or even otherwise. They are certainly tuned better for the blues and tough times as they normally take life momentarily which is the only way of living for a better living by leaving all your worries of past or future. Our latest Guruji Sri.Sri.Ravisankar of ‘the art of living’ has pointed out that the only way of surviving is by not worrying too much about your past or future as god has already made out a plan for you to follow and you will have to face all the music called life experiences good bad and ugly. But to think of having a no way out will be more disastrous way of giving up only due to despair is the most cowardly act a person can do as in majority of the cases we have found, it was after all for good only, which has lead us in setbacks, as we may think but to be proved as the biggest opportunity in ones life when you think back in hindsight after a few years.

So guys don’t worry, all you to do is have girls around to lift you up, spend time with them they have this mantra called liveliness and seeing them giggle is enough for most guys. Perverted ones with weird childhood and un- natural or for that matter according to ones inclinations the cases may differ and may not have the effect cited above in such circumstances, in such cases they may choose their partners and spend times together.

Women are best equipped for survival and are happy most times, unlike men like me who takes things too seriously and spoil my own mood and turn myself towards depression. This is also having a negative effect on the persons surrounding me as well, which is a crime. We must try to radiate positive side rather the half filled glass than the half empty side.

Mistakes and misfortunes are part and parcel of all lives no man or women is perfect, what ever you make your life to be will remain as it may but if you can make that little difference to lift up people during their bad times is the righteous way of living.

CONTRIBUTION OF RELIGIONS FOR GOOD DEEDS.

CHRISTIANITY, FAITH & CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIETY.

Christianities’ role in uplifting tribal lives in India has been a glorious story, the social status of the most backward Indians was seen to have converted and made to toil for an upright living no matter which fields they choose. Education was the main tool used by putting in systems and institutions around the globe did help in numbers of educated youth getting higher and higher. The talents were identified to maximum levels and gave education perhaps a little materialistic out look prevails the half hearted approach in any religion may result in such materialistic per suits. Other wise the story has been a great success especially in Kerala [For the first time an Indian Sister Alphonsa has been rewarded posthumously the sainthood status].

In my mind I am sure the conversions of tribal development has no harm in it, and I fail to understand the ultra Hindu’s who are against it is clearly playing for vote bank politics, only acting for selfish politics or for want of suppressing the downtrodden by higher caste hindus’ perhaps. In any case it is highly intriguing to see the 5 percent Brahmins out of the 1.20 billion holds almost a mind boggling guess which is about 95 percent of the government jobs being held till recently as a couple of decades back, by the 5 percent. Now at least things are beginning to change in India except for mainly the earlier big states of M.P, U.P and Bihar.

The social revolutions have to take place otherwise people will lose faith in god himself leave alone the governments. But the fact that it is taking awfully long, as we would have cherished the thought of seeing the reality changes on the ground in real measures. There are naturally people who don’t want to share but those are selfish guys who don’t deserve any sympathy.

I have high respect and regards for some individuals especially, who is keen on putting the records straight for the benefit of the mass around the globe. Having spent considerable years in Nagaland in India I have seen the efforts of a Christian Missionary by accident, an American who lost all his family in a ship wreck near present day Kolkatta and as the lone survivor he thinks that his life was saved by god to change him and his outlook and spends the rest of his life for the up liftment of Nagaland and the tribes who were bafflingly backward just like our US American Red Indians ,he succeeds in turning them to good Christians and most of all cultured and educated youth working for the society along with their own families.
