follow it." (speaking on self discipline)

Printer First and Last

Benjamin Franklin personifies the spirit and inventiveness of the modern
world. His accomplishments read like an almanac of greatness:

Inventor; poet; philosopher; pamphleteer.
Distinguished member of three national academies of science.
America's first Postmaster general.
Founder of Philadelphia's first police force, lending library, and the
academy which would become the University of Pennsylvania.
Founder of the first fire insurance company.
Delegate to the Constitutional Convention.
Drafter of the Declaration of Independence.
One of America's most effective statesman and ambassadors.

But for all his achievements, and for all his wealth, the epitaph Franklin
wrote for himself simply reads "Here lies the body of Ben Franklin,
printer."

In honoring his humble roots as printer's apprentice, Benjamin Franklin
reveals a lot about what made him great. It was the world of printing that
first exposed Franklin to new books, writers, and ideas. Without this
foundation, the rest of his accomplishment would not have been possible.

Food For Thought

Young Ben Franklin would sacrifice just about anything for an opportunity
to learn.

Early on, he was so attracted to learning and teachings that his father
believed him headed for the ministry. But since his family had no money
for a college education, he ended his schooling at ten years old,
apprenticing with his father as a candle maker, then to his brother James
as a printer.

Finding himself with little spare money for books or spare time for study,
Franklin devised a plan. In his own words...

"I happened to meet with a book recommending a vegetable diet. I
determined to [adopt] it and then proposed to my brother that if he would
give me the money he paid for my board, I would board myself. He agreed,
and I presently found that I could save half what he paid me. This was an
additional fund for buying books.

"But I had another advantage in it. My brother and the rest going from the
Printing House to their meals, I remained there alone, and [eating] my
light [meal] (which often was no more than a biscuit or a slice of bread,
a handful of raisins or a tart...and a glass of water) had the rest of the
time until their return, for study, in which I made the greater progress
from that greater clearness of head and quicker apprehension which usually
attend temperance in eating and drinking."1

Benjamin Franklin understood the value of reading and learning early on.
His passion for learning laid the foundation for his successful career as
inventor, poet, philosopher and statesman.

Lived Usefully

Ben Franklin once wrote, "I would rather have it said 'he lived usefully'
than 'he died rich.'" More than
just words, it was the way Franklin lived his life.

According to Dr. John C. Van Horne, Library Company of Philadelphia:
"Franklin's philanthropy was what I call
of a collective nature. His sense of benevolence was aiding his fellow
human beings and doing good to society. In fact, in one sense, Franklin's
philanthropy, his sense of benevolence, was his religion. Doing good to
mankind was, in his understanding, divine."

Even his position as a printer fit this philosophical bent. He did not
hoard his ideas, but shared them, and
everyone benefited. He had an "abundance mentality."

Instead of seeing the world in terms of how much money he could make,
Franklin saw the world in terms of how many people he could help. To
Benjamin Franklin, being useful was its own reward.

Everyone starts from scratch, but not everyone keeps on scratching.

WORK FOR SOCIETY AGAINST GLOBAL WARMING.

I have thought of ways and means of tackling global warming and have come out with some measures which will ensure that drastic climate changes does not occur in our race against the nature’s ultimatum.

My first suggestion is to plant big oxygen emitting trees on a mass scale throughout the world. If one person succeeds in planting and making sure that at least one tree per head is made to grow, and then at least India itself will have more than a billion trees planted in the coming few years this forestation programme has to be undertaken on war footing by all countries immediately at least to ensure the rate of the warming is checked to some extent. One also get the other benefits against soil erosion etc apart from the amount of oxygen emitted and the coolness connected to those big trees every where to the maximum possible areas may be covered.

Secondly, more and more eco friendly measures like changing from bulbs, using pollution free energy sources and reducing emitting of green gas world wide, should be made mandatory for all countries to follow up strictly. Recycling materials has to be the main usage for mankind instead of plastics and other non perishables rather; the usage of non disposables which does not mix up with the soil and possibly may also emits poison or radiation is also a great risk for humanity. The usage of wood has to be limited to the barest minimum possible so as to check on the cutting of trees. It should be made more punishable for those who do not adhere to these laws, which have to be first enacted by the governments of all the countries if possible.

Thirdly, we must encourage in scientific activities and research oriented programmers to find more and more ways and means of using for instance solar energy and the likes which is cheaply available in most part on earth. Wind in some countries like UK already have become the major source of energy and should be encouraged where ever possible. But due to the lack of constant supply and its intermittent nature it has its limitations.

These are only a layman’s views on the possible counter measures one can think of from the recent moods and swings of the nature very unlike in the past, when I too vividly remember having smelled the woods and loved walking in the woods even during summer holidays, it used to be so cool under the trees and the feeling in being a part of the nature and all the incredible creatures we encountered are all now slowly fading away to be a thing of the past like those long lost dinosaurs. The path of evolution and scientific advancement or is it more towards destruction is a possibility unless we urgently intervene honestly and without playing politics, regionalism, or one up man ship. The hour is grave and requires urgent and drastic measures to go back on so many so called development which in real is the most destructive path mankind ever undertook in the known times.

swings in life

RISE AND FALL DEFFERENT SIDES OF THE SAME COIN.

Falling in life is on most occasions a blessing for the simple reason that each fall will be followed by a rise and you become wiser after each fall in life. Recent upheavals in the share market too had taken its own toll on so many youngsters; some even went for the extreme of ending life out of fear for the liabilities as a result of the sharp fall in shares. The ultimate truth is that whatever is the amount liabilities one can surely make up later in life through more prudent investment and becoming more disciplined to face the adverse situations in life.

When you hit the bottom you can feel relaxed for, you are only bound to go upwards and the worst is over. This should be the mantra for ones life. Rise and falls are inevitable in ones life. The most important aspect should be not to panic or lose control and never ever be remorseful for the past. Look and take stock of the situation to evaluate the loss in terms of money, assets and most often you will also be losing quite a few relationships as a result. All the losses can be made up again if one is able concentrate and remain focused on the next opportunity, which is bound to come your way again.

I have always thought about the people who give up life because they are unable to bear the loss of money, relationships, or what ever is the reason behind for some to take such extreme step. It is actually being silly. All they need is an assurance from with in them and not repeat the same mistake again. You must deliberately take your mind off the subject and should not be remorseful for the simple reason that you can’t change the past either way so better forget, concentrate on what you are good at. In ninety nine cases out of one hundred you can observe that it was foolish for those, who does take such extreme steps, as time, is the biggest healer and also helps you bury the past and go ahead in a new path resulting in positive growth of any individual. I feel our youngsters must be taught early in their life to take and absorb equally any negative or positive impacts which comes in way of all living beings with the same dignity and self-respect. One should be prepared mentally to face all such situations in life without much emotion, anger, or fallibility. Such balanced approach is the most viable and honorable solution when faced with glory or defeat. One should be able to absorb any such shock with dignity and calmness; it is possible for all human beings to learn about the trick of controlling our emotions and the balancing acts. A cool individual is the one who is not affected much by the success or failures in life and still manages to keep his cool and character, the same, in adversities and good times equally.

The frail character of some youngsters was disturbing as they are unable to cope with adversities such as rejection in job or employment opportunities and the failure in Exams etc. these traits could have been avoided had they been taught in younger years about the possibilities of failures and the importance of not losing control of oneself even in the worst scenarios. Lack of will power and presence of mind some times may prove to be the ultimate road block to success. The feeling of helplessness of our younger generation is due to the feeling that all is lost and in reality on most such occasions we can see with hindsight that all was not lost. On most occasions they end up in better and more rewarding careers than the one they lost early. There are numerous instances when I was not selected for a job only to end up in a better job much later, which I thought was not possible earlier. Rejection at times may prove to be the best thing to have happened in ones life when you look back. The story about a businessman who had sought for a deal and have followed after the same for years and at last just when he got the deal in his favour he was so excited and some how missed the plane which was supposed to take him abroad, to seal the deal. Missing the plane meant missing out on the deal itself as the deadline was over by then. In his disappointment he cursed all and sundry which included his wife who had delayed while packing his suitcase. The next day he read in the news that the plane in which he was supposed to go had crash-landed killing all those unfortunate passengers. That was the moment when he realized that missing the plane was an act of god and has saved his life. We all can cite such stories to boost the youngster’s confidence level.

They are more vulnerable in present times due to the cut throat competitions faced in life as the opportunities are much far lesser that the requirement of employment in our country. This has resulted in frustration and depression among our youngsters and directly affects their young minds to go wayward in life out of sheer lack of good employment opportunities. The numbers of youngsters joining in insurgency and terrorism in majority are actually unemployed and frustrated youngsters. The willingness not to accept menial jobs, which comes their way firsts also may be one reason. The dignity of labour should be highlighted. Disappointments and rejections are very common and should not be allowed to make us lose our mind over it. Instead we must be better prepared on next occasion and also make sure that we don’t repeat the same mistake a second time. If you take the most successful among our populace we all can see that each and every one among them have actually failed at least once or more occasions in their respective lives. Come back stories are also so common that we can see that so many of them had fallen only to rise again more powerful and wise. You may recall the case of Amitab Bachan who had actually hit rock bottom and have made again from ashes. One can cite hundreds of stories which are similar. Never give up on life try again and again till you succeed.

Today what seems to be impossible may actually be possible later. Time has a cute way of making people realize how stupid they were in hindsight. Every set back in life should be taken as a lesson well learned. Like wise every success in life does not last long for the cycle of events takes people for a ride turning rich in to poor and vice verse overnight. To be able to stand upright and wade through all the turmoil’s in life and still remain unscathed is the real man with character and deserves to be appreciated.
